The Link Between Actos and Bladder Cancer
An Actos recall has been issued in France due to a study finding an increased risk of bladder cancer with prolonged Actos use. Health agencies’ reactions range from recommending Actos label changes to that of imposing outright bans.
France and Germany have already imposed bans on the drug Actos as a result of a study done by the French Public Health Insurance Office published in June 2011, voicing concerns over the safety of Actos. This study found patients whom took Actos twenty-four (24) months or longer, faced an increased risk of developing bladder cancer.
Throughout Europe, health officials have implemented recom-mendations for new warning labels to be added to Actos packaging. In the United States, the FDA has also implemented a new labeling requirement with regard to Actos.
Actos, manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, is prescribed as a therapy to reduce insulin resistance, a common problem with sufferers Type II diabetes. The exact reason what causes the link between taking Actos and the increase in bladder cancer still remains unknown.
It is believed that Takeda Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Actos, knew or should have known the association between taking Actos and being diagnosed with bladder cancer for numerous years before the FDA stepped in. However, they failed or declined to properly warn diabetes patients. As a result, individuals diagnosed with bladder cancer may be entitled to compensation through an Actos lawsuit.
