Actos

The link between Bladder Cancer and Actos PHOTO: Actos antidiabetic drugs

Actos is an oral medication prescribed for those with Type 2 Diabetes. Research conducted by the American Diabetes Association is in agreement with preclinical and clinical studies indicating an association between Actos and bladder cancer.  It suggests that there may be a higher occurrence of bladder cancer from Actos the longer the medication is taken.

Potential symptoms of bladder cancer which may be caused by the use of Actos may include:

  • Blood in your urine
  • Painful urination
  • Frequently urinating
  • Unable to successfully or adequately urinate

Additional side-effects have been noted by the FDA and clinical sites which indicate there may be additional less severe issues associated with the use of Actos such as headaches, sinus infections, toothaches, muscle pains, sore throat, water retention, fatigue, stomach cramps, jaundiced eyes, and appetite loss.

In September 2010, the FDA issued the report Reviewing the safety of Actos while exploring a possible increase to the risk of Bladder Cancer.  The FDA launched an investigation to determine if users have a higher risk of being diagnosed with bladder cancer after ingesting Actos. The FDA has now taken action upon the manufacturer of Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, who has turned over interim data from an on-going 10-year study suggesting a possible link may exist between Actos and bladder cancer.

The attorneys at Bernheim & Dolinsky, L.LC. are evaluating potential Actos lawsuits for bladder cancer as a result of the manufacturer’s failure to adequately warn about the potential risk.
