Actos Bladder Cancer Treatment

There are several types of treatment for patients with bladder cancer. According to the National Cancer Institute, below are the four (4) standard treatments used to treat patients with bladder cancer:

  1. Surgery
  2. Radiation therapy
  3. Chemotherapy
  4. Biologic therapy

To remove the bladder cancer, the doctor may perform one of the following surgeries:

Transurethral Surgery:

According to the American Cancer Society, in early stages bladder cancer, Transurethral Surgery is utilized.  A transurethral resection (TUR), known also a transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT), is the standard procedure for treatment. “Transurethral” surgery does not have any cutting of the abdomen as it is performed with an instrument pushed through the urethra.

Cystectomy

The American Cancer Society states a Cyctectomy is performed when invasive cancer of the bladder is present and parts or the entire bladder needs to be removed. There are two common types of Cyctecomies.   The Partial cycectomy and radical cyctectomy.

  • Partial cystectomy:  Occasionally surgery can be performed where not the whole bladder is removed.  This is done when cancer is detected in the muscle but is small enough to be localized to one locale. The tumor is excised and then the hole in the bladder wall is closed.  Very few patients diagnosed with bladder cancer are candidates for this type of surgery.
  • Radical cystectomy: With bigger cancerous areas or when numerous cancerous areas in the bladder are affected, a radical cystectomy may be required. In this case, the whole bladder and lymph nodes are removed.

Reconstructive surgery: The American Cancer Society states that if the bladder is excised another method to hold and dispel urine needs to be surgical created. Several types of reconstructive surgery can be done depending on your medical situation and personal preferences.

  • One option may be to remove a short piece of the intestine and connect it to the ureters. A tiny bag is then placed over the stoma to catch urine, which will then continuously come out in small amounts.
  • Continent diversion is also an option to drain urine.  Here, the surgeon creates a valve from the intestine. This creates a pouch for urine to then be stored.
